Cycling to School
At Welling School we recognise the many positive benefits of students cycling to and from school and therefore encourage this form of travel. Some of the benefits of cycling to school include:
- Improving health through physical activity
- Establishing positive active travel behaviour
- Promoting independence and improving safety awareness
- Reducing congestion, noise and pollution in the community
- Reducing environmental impact of the journey to school
Students of all ages are allowed to use bicycles to travel to and from Welling school.
Expectations
Student
- Enter and exit via the Elsa Road pedestrian gate, dismount at the gate and wheel bicycle to the bike sheds.
- Not ride bicycles within the school grounds, including the car park.
- Secure bicycles with a suitable lock at the bike sheds.
- Wear a cycle helmet
- Ensure being seen by other road users by using bicycle lights and high visibility clothing
- Take responsibility for checking that bike is roadworthy.
Parent and Carer
- Encourage child to take up opportunities to develop competence and confidence in cycling
- Provide child with appropriate safety equipment such as high-visibility clothing, as appropriate
- Ensure that the bicycles ridden to school are roadworthy and regularly maintained.
- Are advised to take out insurance cover for bicycles as the school carries no insurance cover for loss or damage
The school accepts no liability for damage or loss to bicycles while on the school grounds, unless negligent.
The school reserves the right to ban any student from cycling to/from school for persistently failing to follow the expectations set out in this policy. The school may implement this ban if there are health and safety concerns.
