House System
At Welling School, as part of our continued journey to providing your child with an outstanding education and our ongoing efforts to build a strong and vibrant school community, we have introduced our new house system.
During the 1950's Welling School launched it's first ever house system. Welling had evolved to two schools during this time on one site, a girls school and a boys school. For the boys, the houses were named after famous generals and admirals Gordon, Wolfe, Shovel and Sidney. For the girls, the houses were named after famous ships Endeavour, Golden Hind, Discovery and Victory. Due to Welling’s links with the war we have decided on the following names for our own house system and the following colours:
- Victory
- Endeavour
- Honour
- Discovery
Our house system will be an integral part of the school day. Each house will have its own house captain and vice captain, along with a head of house. Their tasks are to motivate and enthuse the students within their respective house and play a full and active part in the inter-house competitions.
Every student and member of staff is placed in one of the houses when they join Welling School. Where possible, siblings are placed in the same house to foster a sense of family loyalty and to ease tension on Sports Day. By being a member of the house community, pupils and staff are encouraged to show team spirit. At the very heart of the house system is our school vision, ‘we are Kind, Ambitious and Active’. Put simply, we want our children and young people to:
- Engage in a diverse range of activities
- Participate in healthy competition
- Develop a sense of community cohesion
- Show compassion for other people
There will be many house events throughout the calendar year. This ensures that everyone has the opportunity to represent their house in something that they enjoy or are good at. For example, house events could include sporting activities, art competitions, cookery contests and various other activities such as gardening, playground games and events designed and organised by our pupils.
All pupils will have the opportunity to earn house points for their house. Points are awarded for things such as good work, contribution to lessons, community spirit and participation in inter-house competitions. Pupils can also gain valuable house points every week for doing the right thing or going the extra mile. At the end of the academic year all house points are added up and one house will win the overall and prestigious inter-house cup.
Each house has also been allocated a local charity. Each time a house is involved in a fund raising activity, the funds from that event will go towards the house charity. Below are the houses allocated charities :
