Welcome

Welcome from the Headteacher

Welling School, located in the Borough of Bexley, is an 11-18 mixed Academy, part of the TKAT family of schools.

Dear Parents and Carers I am delighted to have been appointed as the new Headteacher for Welling School and I am very much looking forward to getting to know all our pupils, parents, carers and staff.

I have most recently worked for the Loxford School Trust as a Trust Deputy. This area of work allowed me to join schools requiring improvement and use my skills and experience to bring about much needed change. I am passionate about education unlocking doors and enabling all young people to make ‘their’ next steps. Social mobility and the opportunities that an excellent education provides has always been at the heart of my moral purpose. I am also passionate about learning that occurs both in and out of the classroom. The development of ‘softer’ skills and qualities is vital in today’s fast changing world. Welling school should be a place which inspires children and provides them with an outstanding platform for future success both personally and professionally

I first visited Welling in late January 2023 and met with Mr Hatley. In my conversations with staff and pupils, I was immediately struck by the enormous potential Welling has to be a great school. The staff body is dedicated and works incredibly hard for the benefit of all young people. The school buildings, with the benefit of capital investment, have also been improved, on what is an impressive, large site. I was also very impressed during my interview with the pupil panel who were articulate and asked some very challenging questions! Welling School has already made impressive steps on its improvement journey and I am sure over the next term you will become aware that further improvements are taking place.

From my experience of being a Deputy Headteacher for 11 years, I know that a successful and happy school depends on all of us working together. As parents and carers, you make an important contribution to your children’s achievements, and I am excited to build on the relationship between you and the school.

On that note, I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of the school’s expectations of all pupils and would be grateful for your support:

Mobile Phones

The school has a no mobile phone policy for pupils. Any pupils using a mobile phone in school will have the phone confiscated and will receive a 45 minute detention. Repeat offences will carry an increased detention and a parental collection on every occasion after.

Uniform

All pupils should arrive at school in full school uniform as listed on the website. Pupils without the correct items will be offered spare uniforms. This will carry a 30 minute after school detention. If this pattern persists the detention will be increased and parents will be asked to meet with a member of the senior team in order to find a solution.

Senior Leadership Team Detention

This detention will run every Friday after school for 90 minutes and will be issued for cases of serious misconduct or persistent pattern of poor behaviour.

I will be holding a number of events over the next term, including coffee mornings and parent forums, (dates to be confirmed), and I look forward to meeting many of you there. These meetings will take place at a number of different times in the hope that as many families as possible will have the opportunity to attend.

You are also welcome to contact me at head@wellingschool-tkat.org

I am very much looking forward to making a significant contribution to the continued improvement journey of Welling school.

Yours faithfully,

Brian Griffen
