Year 9 Options
Welcome to the Year 9 Options area
Choosing your options for the next two years plays a very important role in your future pathway through education. You need to think carefully not only about what you choose to study but also why you want to study it, and if it will take you to where you want to be in two years’ time?
We have designed the option blocks to give all of you the best opportunity to follow the pathway that supports you in building a solid foundation for Post 16 study or training, which is now compulsory for all.
Now is the time for you to be thinking about your future plans for studying at University, colleges or following a route into an apprenticeship. It may seem early, but the choices you make for the next two years can affect what you can choose to do in the future. We would advise that you do some research into courses that you may be interested in when you leave school at 18, they will give you some indication about which subjects they think are the best for you to study. Remember, keep as many doors open as you can at this stage - not many people of your age know what they want to do in 2 or 4 years time. If you keep to the traditional EBacc subjects you will keep your options open for all Post 16 choices. If you work better with continual assessment, in units rather than final exams only, then vocational subjects may be better-suited to your style of learning. We want you to be successful in completing all of your option courses.
How to choose your option subjects
Read the Options 2021 booklet in this options area. It will give you information about the content of each course and the style of assessment. If you have any further questions to ask, it also provides you with the email for the Head of each Faculty or subject, you should contact them directly with your questions.
You will receive, via email, your personalised options form to complete. You will have been offered a pathway of subjects according to your prior attainment, this will guide you towards the choices that are best-suited to you as an individual and offer you the best chance for future academic success. You will have the chance to select your first and second choices in each block. We always do our best to give as many students as possible their first choices, but we ask you to make a second choice where this is not possible.
Once you have completed the form, return it to us at the email address indicated on the form. The deadline for return is the 19th March. If you wish to speak to a member of the Year 9 team about the option pathway you have been offered, you will find their contact details in the options booklet.
Everyone will study Maths, English language, English Literature and some Science (either combined or single sciences). Everyone will have core PE and Personal Development on their timetable too.
Take your time to think about what is best for you and how your choices match with your future ambitions.
