A GCSE in English Language is the minimum requirement for any career. Students who do not achieve the expected grade which is considered a good pass will be required to re-sit the GCSE at Sixth form, college or whilst studying for an apprenticeship.

Course Description: 

The English GCSE is a two-year course, culminating in two equally weighted exams sat at the end of year 11. For Paper 1, students will study an extract from a literary fictional text, as well as producing a piece of narrative or descriptive writing. 

For Paper 2, students will study two non-fiction texts, as well as producing a piece of writing to present a viewpoint. Speaking and Listening continues to be assessed, but will not contribute towards the final grade.

Technical accuracy is now more important than ever, with spelling, punctuation and grammar accounting for 40% of the marks on the writing sections.

Potential Career Opportunities: 

A GCSE in English Literature facilitates the further study of English at A- level, and is a desirable qualification in any career requiring communication skills.


Course Description: 

The English Literature GCSE is a two-year course, culminating in two exams sat at the end of year 11.

For Paper 1, worth 40% of the overall grade, students will study a play by Shakespeare (Macbeth)

and a 19th- century novel (A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens). They will be expected to respond in detail to an extract from the texts, as well as the texts as a whole.

For Paper 2, worth 60% of the final grade, students will study the play An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestley and an anthology of poetry, and they will be examined on two previously unseen poems. Technical accuracy accounts for 5% of the overall marks available.

Creative Media Production

Potential Career Opportunities: Media industries are a huge growth area in the UK today, offering a wide variety of jobs in film, television, advertising, web-based services, the music industry and more.


Course Description:

This course is an introduction to media industries and production. It is a hands-on course that gives a taste of what the sector is like, as well as the skills and confidence to succeed in your next steps - perhaps taking Media Studies,  Film or Journalism in sixth form or college.  You will have the chance to develop valuable skills and techniques in different disciplines, produce a practical response to a digital media brief, and explore potential careers in the industry.

The course is entirely coursework-assessed, with 66% internally assessed (marked by teachers) and 33%   externally assessed (a task set and marked by the exam board but completed in class).  Students will develop key skills in planning, production and evaluation of success through practical assignments covering a variety of media industries such as television, film, advertising and magazines.  Through this process, you will learn practical skills such as photography and videography, using Photoshop and video editing software and principles of effective print and web design.


Why Study Creative Media Production?

This course is a great introduction to the media sector, giving you a taste of the kinds of work you might want to go into as well as allowing you to develop your creativity and explore aspects of an industry that is all around you but which you have probably never studied before.

Course Description:

The course covers a wide range of themes, including hurricanes, urban settlement issues, climate change, tropical rainforests, development, national parks and sustainable transport. There are two days of fieldwork because some of the exam questions are about how geography is investigated in the real world.

Despite living in an increasingly modern and seemingly manufactured world, humankind will forever rely on the environment. By studying the patterns of our planet, we may be able to predict potential hazards in the future and therefore help to implement precautions to avoid such results, such as global warming.

Course Description: 

In History, we cover a wide range of historic periods across three separate exam papers. We will look at a range of different types of History too. We will be looking at Norman England, see how the Normans conquered England and helped shape its development to this day. We will study the history of Medicine in this country from 1250 - to the present day; which has become incredibly relevant given the global pandemic. We will look at the Cold War and see how the USA and USSR went from allies in WW2 to enemies. Finally, we will also study the inter-war period in German history, tracing the impact of defeat in the war through the Roaring Twenties and the subsequent rise of support for the Nazis and beyond. 

All of these topics will be covered by looking at events and evidence, and will give you the ability to express complex ideas in writing. You will develop the skills needed to justify and explain your ideas, skills vital in today’s world. We will develop skills of source analysis so that you are able to interrogate the information you are presented with, not just in History but also in life in general.

This course will suit those who thrive in written expression. The course demands longer written explanations.

Course Description:

By studying Food Preparation and Nutrition, students will get the chance to develop, practice and   demonstrate practical skills, making a variety of food products. They’ll need to consider how to scale up production to produce larger quantities suitable for a commercial setting.

Unit 1: Students will undertake a number of mini-projects that will allow them to be assessed against   12 core practical skills.

Unit 2: Learners will undertake an extended project that showcases the skills they have developed in Unit 1 and the knowledge they have developed through Unit 3. The students will produce a menu, production plan and sample dishes in response to the brief in addition to a small portfolio to evidence the planning and development and testing and evaluation stages.

Unit 3: Through a written exam, students will be assessed on their knowledge and understanding of the following: meals and menu planning; cooking methods and recipes; commercial practice; careers opportunities; food hygiene and safety.


Who will this course suit?

Students choosing the course need to be organised and enjoy experimenting with food. Students will have the opportunity to learn and practise a variety of skills.

Drama

Specific jobs in drama include working as a paid actor in theatre, film, TV or radio. Other opportunities lie in stage management, lighting and sound, costume, director, prop maker, teacher. 


Course Description:

Drama at KS4 is a fun, creative and highly rewarding subject. Students will develop skills for life, including teamwork, communication, co-operation, debate and discussion.  

In Year 10, students complete Component 1 – Devising Theatre. Within this unit students will be taught the basic skills that are essential for performance. This unit is internally moderated. Learners are required to devise a piece of original theatre in response to a stimulus.

In Year 11, students complete Component 2 – performing from a text, which is assessed by an external examiner. Students choose 2 sections of text to perform from a play or text, showing development of their characters through their performance or technical skills. During this year students also complete Component 3, which is a written exam.   This component requires learners to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of how drama and theatre is developed and performed. Students will be expected to see a live theatre production in Year 11. They must experience this in order to complete Section B of their written examination. 


Who will this course suit?

Anybody who is interested in becoming a theatre practitioner, whether as a performer, backstage or in administration. Equally, if you are interested in a career in the media industry, public relations or marketing, drama is a great way to develop the presentation skills, critical thinking and confidence to succeed in these areas.


Why Study Drama?

This GCSE promotes involvement in and enjoyment of drama, as performers and/or designers. Additionally, it provides opportunities to attend live theatre performances and to develop skills as informed and thoughtful audience members.

Course Description: 

This exciting music performance course is aimed at singers, guitarists, bassists, keyboard players and other musicians aiming to work in the commercial popular music field. Commercial popular music, such as pop, folk, rock, metal, blues, R&B, soul, indie and alternative form a key sector in the music industry and this course aims to support you in developing your skills as a performer.

You will work together with other musicians to write, record and perform music. We welcome applications from solo singer/songwriters as well as musicians who wish to form bands. All students will have the opportunity to work with other musicians to develop their ensemble skills.


Who will this course suit?

This course is ideal for anybody who is passionate about music and/or the music industry. It would suit students who are already able to play an instrument or sing, or have an interest in developing those skills.

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to music and music technology. Students will make music with computers, record and compose both individually and in groups. The BTEC is a very hands-on course, focusing heavily on practical skills, and is assessed largely through the production of coursework.

Students will work on units based around the music business, composing and sound recording, sequencing and microphone technique, and will complete a production project writing music for film and computer games.

During the course, students will develop the skills of using music production software packages, building towards producing a portfolio of music. Students learn to use microphones, mixing desks and related recording equipment to produce high-quality recordings of several pieces of music. They will learn about mixing and mastering, and take their tracks on to become finished audio files. The course also develops a high level of planning skills, and the ability to operate as part of a team.
