Governing Body
Welling School is an academy as part of The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT).
TKAT is a multi-academy trust which was established on 1st September 2010. It’s constitution is set out in the Articles of Association and this is shared with individual academies via the Scheme of Delegation. TKAT have, through the Scheme of Delegation, established Local Governing Bodies for each of the Academies.
The Local Governing Body of each of the Academies is responsible for fulfilling the strategic and operational governance role in the conduct of the Academy.

Welling School Local Governing Body (LGB)
The Governing Body of Welling School aims to support the ethos of the schools and wider community in educating outward-looking learners who will thrive in their own lives and contribute to make the world a better place.
We will achieve this through both an active involvement in the daily life of the schools where appropriate and by working closely with the Schools Senior Leadership Teams:
- To set challenging aims and objectives with the schools and support the schools in achieving them.
- To agree policies, priorities and performance targets in order to accomplish these objectives.
- To look for evidence that these objectives are being achieved and challenge where appropriate.
The Governing body will always act in the best interests of the Academies and its pupils. We will be prepared to explain clearly our decisions in an open and transparent way to staff, parents, pupils and others in the wider community. We will be united in a common vision for the schools shared by the Headteacher’s in promoting the highest possible academic standards.
The Governors will act as a cooperate body, with integrity, objectivity and honesty.

Impact Statement
Governor Impact Statement - Welling School 2019
During the year the LGB has lost 2 members: the reasons given were that both of them found it difficult to match their employment commitments to the requirements of being a governor. This is an important issue to be addressed: the LGB has lost several members in recent years because of this.
We have replaced both of them but only since the COVID-19 crisis so they have been unable to meet personally with the other members of the LGB. They have joined and made valuable contributions to the Zoom meetings. There is an urgent need to find a way to engage with them in person.
Governors have actively contributed in the following ways:
- One governor works very closely with the learning support team and has made numerous visits to Welling . Another governor has taken a personal interest in those students who have long term medical needs.
- Have met with the leaders of the key stages to understand their roles. They have also met with Matt Barrett regarding Finance & Health & Safety. During these visits governors have visited lessons, spoken with staff & students & walked through the school looking at display, behaviour & student notebooks. During terms 1 & 2 there was a focus on how robust the data collected was and on the feedback given to students in their notebooks. Another governor takes an interest in the needs of the most able students.
- Have sat on exclusion panels.
- Have sat on the Pay Committee and the Appeal Board.
- Have attended the Open morning, concerts, plays, exhibitions & Prize evenings
- Attended training sessions provided by TKAT & Bexley,
- The chair, an experienced science teacher, has met with the new Director of Science in order to understand the problems within the faculty & to discuss possible solutions to those issues. Has been on the interview panels for SLT appointments & for the appointment of the new Executive Principal. The Chair has also monitored the preparations for the return to school in September & visited in order to monitor those preparations in situ, and attended debriefing sessions following TKAT reviews.
- All governors have been involved in LGB Zoom meetings.
